66 East 4th Street New York, NY 10003Public restitution led by dancer and choreographer Germaine Acogny with dance students from NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
Germaine Acogny is widely considered the Mother of Contemporary African Dance. Her dance styles and teachings reclaim and reposition traditional African movements within the world of contemporary dance, encouraging artists worldwide to recognize the power and contributions of African dance.
This program marks the culmination of a week-long series of intensive workshops led by Acogny. From Sep 30–Oct 4, the founder and director of the renowned Ecole des Sables in Senegal, Acogny will teach dance students at NYU Tisch School of the Art her technique that draws from traditional West African dance and contemporary western dance. On Fri, Oct 4, the students will present their work during the public restitution at La MaMa, accompanied by live drumming.
